In Japan, the Act on Ensuring Proper Domestic Distribution of Specified Aquatic Animals and Plants (2020) designates Pacific saury, sardine, mackerel and squid as regulated species requiring import certification. Pacific saury is also managed internationally under the NPFC (North Pacific Fisheries Commission).
Your vessel's position is automatically logged every 30 seconds. This trail can later prove "when and where you operated", serving as an alibi for legitimate fishermen and distinguishing them from unreported operations.
Fleet members share their positions in real time, so peers can quickly notice accidental entry into no-take zones or protected areas, and prevent violations before they occur.
The fleet catch-report feature retains vessel ID, fishing area, date/time and quantity as electronic records — the same essential data elements required by Catch Documentation Schemes (CDS) worldwide.
Traditional Vessel Monitoring Systems focus on large offshore vessels. Funedoko works with just a smartphone from about USD 7/month, extending transparency to coastal fisheries that account for around 20% of Japan's total catch*2.
Positioning: Funedoko is not a substitute for official monitoring systems (governmental VMS, etc.). It is a private-sector tool that allows fishermen themselves to proactively record and share evidence of legitimate operation. The position and operation data that naturally accumulates through daily use aims to also generate broader social benefits such as resource management, traceability and international trust.
